About the course:


The level 3 course is interactive and involves discussion, presentations and most importantly practical coaching experience throughout all three disciplines.
The course is designed to build on the level 2 course, where coaches will be introduced for the first time in their coaching development to the interdisciplinary nature of sport science and annual planning for coaching on a 1-2-1 basis with individual athletes, from novice to age-group level, and covers more advanced swimming, cycling and running techniques. In addition to the discipline modules, coaching will be introduced to delivering field based testing methods, i.e. non-laboratory tests.
The level 3 coaching role has been defined as:
"Plan, implement, analyse and revise annual coaching programmes"
Course duration and cost
6 days spread over 3 weekends, and each weekend is usually separated by 1-2 weeks. Each day usually lasts from 9am - 5pm, however this can be dependant on facility hire.

Methods of assessment


The course is a competence based and assessment comprises of informal during each module and in the swim bike and run practicals. A formal assessment will be conducted throughout the Swimming cycling and running practicals, where each coach will be required to deliver a 20 minute coaching session, with 5 minutes of questions after.
Assuming the coach displays a level of competence in line with the assessment criteria, they will be able to continue where coaches will work towards their Practical Coaching Experience and complete the course Theory Paper, which relates to the course resources. For this, they are required to plan deliver and evaluate 12 group sessions (4 sessions per discipline) as well as coach a triathlete on a 1-2-1 basis, over a period of 12 continuous weeks, prescribing daily training sessions, based around the periodised annual plan. This should be submitted to the Coach Education department for assessment. On successful completion, certificates will be deployed.


Candidates have 12 months to complete the award, starting from the date of the course.
